Instrument Description This is a Testore copy instrument. It is of violin outline with a flat back that slopes gently in towards the neck. The two-piece back is made from well-figured maple and the ribs are fitted with outside linings. Both ribs and scroll are well matched in terms of flame to that of the back. The table is made from very fine-grained spruce - of almost violin making quality. The purfilling bands to both front and back are of a very narrow gauge and it is probable that Lant used the same gauge for violin, cello and bass making....

William Tarr or Ludwig Neuner? Well you have to admit that this instrument does look every bit like the basses of William Tarr. It has the same out-line, similar arching, a flat back, nicely carved scroll and that same muddy brown spirit varnish that one associates with Tarr - and then - what about those cogs and worms? - they definitely originate in Northern England. How do you know that this double bass was made by Anton Lutz? The instrument bears its original label on the inside bass-side back. The large printed label reads 'Anton Lutz, Schönbach in Böhmen, Post Falkenane. 1878'. The final two figures of the year being hand written. Can you describe the instrument to me please?
