Double bass by George Corsby 1, London circa 1800

Double bass by George Corsby 1, London circa 1800

Sold

Until recently there has been very little knowledge of the Corsby family of makers who were originally from Northampton. Thanks to research done by Hamilton Caswell which culminated in an article in the March 2019 volume of the Strad we now know much more.

This somewhat understated early English viol-shaped instrument bears the maker`s pencil signature on the upper-treble-side of the inside table “Maker - Corsby / London”.

The instrument produces absolutely tons of volume and absolutely tons of pure deep-dark mature tonal quality.

The instrument is featured in the article “Corsby Célèbre” by Hamilton Caswell that appeared in the March 2019 edition of the Strad magazine.
