It is recorded in The Brompton’s Book of Violin and Bow Makers that Luigi Villa was born in Pessano in 1919 and died in Cesano Maderno in 2005. This then means that he made this wonderfully understated instrument at the age of 65. From a making point of view this is very, very impressive indeed, for the instrument shows all the skill, technique and strength of somebody of much younger years. The model is inspired by Strad, the arching is low and graceful, the f-holes are beautifully positioned and flowing, the scroll is bold and well executed, the corners and purfling are all incredibly neat and precise, the edgework is subtle and effective and the gloriously transparent orange-yellow spirit varnish allows the moderate flaming of the maple and the grain-lines of the spruce to really radiate through.

With regard to the way the instrument plays this too is mighty impressive. The instrument responds quickly to the bow and the sound is clear, focused and free-flowing. The volume and tonal qualities are mighty awesome too.

This really is a most beautiful instrument and sure to be a great investment.
